Audi's dominance at the 24 Hours of Le Mans and its attendant series has been reduced through rules and new competition since its initial foray into diesel power, but it still cuts a dramatic figure in any endurance race it enters, including a surprise win at this year's race after the failure of both Peugeots. The new Audi R18 prototype racer does so even more radically, with the addition of a hardtop enclosure to the cockpit. Previous Audi prototype racers, from the R8 to the most recent R15 TDI, have been open-cockpit affairs. But Audi is aiming for its tenth 24 Hours of Le Mans victory with a new direction, due in part to a significant reduction in engine displacement mandated for the race in 2011. The more aerodynamic closed-cockpit car will make better use of the 3.7-liter V-6 TDI engine now fitted to the chassis. Also new to the R18 racer is a six-speed transmission modified for use with the smaller engine. A single-piece carbon fiber monocoque saves weight and improves stiffness, while new all-LED headlights are a first for an Audi race car. In daylight running mode, the headlights project a "1" to intimidate competitors and signify Audi's past victories. The first track test of the new R18 was completed last month, with Allan McNish at the wheel. About the true scale car Rory Bryne designed an all-new car as the technical regulations for 1998 called for 20 cm narrower front and rear tracks and the use of grooved tyres instead of slicks What made this car special was its novel aerodynamic design approach which, in the years to come, would ensure Ferrari’s superiority over its rivals. The engine was new too – the Tipo 047 characterised by an 80°angle between the cylinder banks and numerous internal and external modifications. The suspension design was also modified with the front shock absorbers mounted vertically once again, while torsion bar springing and push-rods were retained all round. 1998 saw Michael Schumacher and Ferrari in line for the World title once again. The red Pioneer livery includes blue rear-wing panels and period-style sponsor markings. Its original box is included. The real car behind this slotcar model is the legendary Porsche 911 GT2 (993 generation) from the mid-90s. However, the specific red/blue/white #21 Pioneer-livery on the ProSlot slot car is a fictional design. ProSlot (and later brands like RevoSlot) more often released "fantasy liveries" at the time with well-known sponsors to expand their offerings without being stuck with historic racing entries. This is the story behind the real car and the brutal class in which he was riding: The Real Car: Porsche 911 GT2 (Type 993) The real 993 GT2 was built by Porsche in 1994 to meet the homologation requirements for the international GT2 class of the FIA. It was the most extreme, track-oriented version of the 911 at the time. The Engine: A 3.6-liter air-cooled biturbo 'flat-six' boxer engine.
