The Ferrari 333 SP #5 of the JB Giesse Team (chassis #022) is an iconic open sports prototype race car that participated in the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1998. The car fell into the top class (LMP1) and stood out enormously for a unique aerodynamic adjustment and the distinctive red-and-white color scheme. The Unique 'Long Tail' The #5 Giesse car was the only Ferrari 333 SP with a long tail (extended rear). This particular aerodynamic design was an idea of former F1 driver and team principal Jean-Pierre Jabouille. The goal was to reduce air resistance and maximize the top speed on the legendary, straight stretch of Les Hunaudières. Racing Statistics & Result (Le Mans 1998) Team: JB Giesse Racing (managed by Jean-Pierre Jabouille) Drivers: Vincenzo Sospiri (IT), Jean-Christophe Boullion (FR) and Jérôme Policand (FR) Qualification: The car qualified 17th overall (and was therefore the fastest of all Ferrari prototypes during that qualification). Performance: Although the car was extremely fast and made a deep impression with meter-long flashes when switching back, fate struck. Result: DNF (Did Not Finish) because of a broken gearbox that took the car off deep into the night. Engine and Engineering Under the skin, the 333 SP was equipped with a breathtaking 4.0-liter V12 engine. This engine was directly derived from the Formula 1 engine from the Ferrari 641 (1990). The engine delivered about 640 to 650 hp and produced the legendary, terrifyingly high F1 whining sound. Champion car Although the Le Mans adventure ended in minor, exactly this chassis (#022) had a huge success in Europe that same year. Sospiri and Emmanuel Collard dominated the International Sports Racing Series (ISRS) and convincingly took the 1998 Teams and Drivers title with this car. Still a stunning car, looking great The Ferrari 333 SP with start number 30, painted in the iconic red-and-yellow MOMO-livery, is one of the most legendary prototypes in modern motorsport history. This car won the 24 Hours of Daytona on 1 February 1998. It marked Ferrari's first-ever overall victory over Daytona in 31 years (since the historic 1-2-3 finish of the Ferrari 330 P4 in 1967). Key Facts About Victory Chassis number: Driven with chassis 019, built by Michelotto. The driver team: Giampiero Moretti (founder of MOMO), Mauro Baldi, Didier Theys and the Dutch racing legend Arie Luyendyk. Team: Registered by Doran / Moretti Racing. Performance: The team dominated the race and eventually won with a lead of no less than 8 laps on the competition. Moretti's dream: Then 57-year-old Giampiero Moretti had been trying to win Daytona for decades. After this victory (followed by win in the 12 Hours of Sebring that same year) he said goodbye to the top sport in style.
