The real car behind the MRRC slotcar is the Bill Thomas Cheetah, one of the most extreme and radical American sports cars of the 60s. The car was built in California between 1963 and 1966 by tuner Bill Thomas, with secret support from General Motors (Chevrolet). The goal of the car was simple: to become the ultimate "Cobra Killer" and defeat Carroll Shelby's Ford-Cobras. While the specific red version with start number #27 is a generic historical race look chosen by MRRC (most original race-Cheetahs drove in red, metallic green, blue or white), the story behind the real machine is legendary. The Bizarre Design: Engine in the Cockpit The construction of the Cheetah was unique and terrifying at the same time: No drive shaft: Designer Don Edmunds placed the giant Corvette 327 V8 engine so far back that the gearbox was directly connected to the rear differential. Extreme seating position: The driver was literally sitting with his legs around the transmission, almost on top of the rear axle. Unreal heat: The exhaust manifolds (headers) ran directly over the driver's footroom. In combination with the body of polyester (fiberglass) it often became warmer than 65 °C in the cockpit, so that drivers sometimes fainted during races. Performance and Numbers Weight: Only 793 kg (1750 lbs) thanks to a feather-light tube frame and a wafer-thin carriage. Power: Depending on the tuning between 360 and 520 hp. Speed: The Cheetah had a bizarrely high top speed. During the Daytona races in 1964, a Cheetah was clocked at a terrifying 346 km/h (215 mph). Why was it not a success? Despite its brutal speed, the Cheetah suffered from extreme road holding problems due to the short wheelbase and a lack of aerodynamic downforce. The car was unpredictable in the corners. In addition, the motorsports federation (FIA) changed the rules: in order to participate in the GT class, 1000 cars suddenly had to be built instead of 100. When Chevrolet withdrew its official support in 1964 and Bill Thomas' factory was destroyed by a fire in 1965, production stopped. Extreme Rarity At the time, only 11 to 23 original Cheetahs were built. This makes the real car today one of the most exclusive and precious American classics in the world, with market values running deep into the seven digits.
