Historical context
During the 1981 edition, a total of six copies of the BMW M1 were at the start. The team Zol'Auto deployed two cars with the familiar green-and-white VSD stickering: the legendary #51 (a Group 5 car groomed by Sauber that finished 16th) and this #72 Group 4 machine. Although the #72 was a strong race, the well-known problems with the crankshaft silencer and subsequent violent vibrations caused the car to give up just before the finish on Sunday morning.
