Audi's open-cockpit R8R #8 appears here in Sport Team Joest colours from Le Mans 1999. The new Carrera Evolution model wears a silver-and-black livery with Shell branding visible in the photos. It is presented in its clear display case with the Audi rear wing and cockpit details on view.

The Audi R8R with start number 8, deployed by Audi Sport Team Joest, achieved a historic third place during the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1999. This result was extra special because it marked Audi’s very first participation in this legendary endurance race.

The car served as the direct open-top forerunner of the legendary Audi R8 LMP, which would completely dominate endurance racing over the following years.

Main details of the race (1999)

Drivers: The car was driven by the iconic trio Frank Biela (Germany), Emanuele Pirro (Italy) and Didier Theys (Belgium).

Performance: The #8 Audi R8R completed 360 laps in 24 hours, finishing in third place on the podium, just behind the winning BMW V12 LMR and the Toyota GT-One. The sister car (the #7 Audi R8R) finished fourth just behind it.

The car: The R8R was an open prototype (LMP) powered by a 3.6-litre twin-turbo V8 engine. Audi also started a closed variant (the R8C) in 1999, but it faced many reliability problems. The reliable open R8R laid the foundation for Audi's later successes.
